Take a Look Overhead

If you have been reading my blog, you may have noticed that in addition to my unfounded love of superheroes, I have a particular soft spot for the wonderful and amazing Spider-Man.  With a trilogy of movies starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst being released in 2002, 2004, and 2007, the notorious Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and the upcoming reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, coming to theatres next Tuesday (agh!), Spider-man has definitely made his mark in mainstream pop-culture.

The Amazing Spider-Man promotional pictures

Some Spidey-Facts:

~Spider-Man made his debut into the Marvel Universe in the comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 which came out in August 1962.
~His release was revolutionary; previously, teenagers in comic books had not carried roles larger than sidekicks or protégés to older superheroes.  Spider-Man, the superhero alias of teenage high-school student Peter Parker, was the first teenage superhero to be released.  He was a relatable pop-culture icon, for teens could relate to his feelings of insufficiency and solitude, as well as the taunting he received from his peers.
~After Marvel executives realized that Amazing Fantasy #15 had been one of the company’s highest selling comic books, they created a solo series revolving around the web-slinger.  The Amazing Spider-Man #1 was released in March 1963 and soon became Marvel’s top-selling series.
~College students in a 1965 Esquire poll included Spider-Man, along with such historical names as Bob Dylan and Che Guevara, as one of their favorite revolutionaries.  They chose him because they felt like they related most to him, because he was “one of us”.
~In 1970, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare under Nixon’s administration asked co-creator, Stan Lee, to publish an anti-drug message in one of the high-selling Marvel comic book series.  He chose to incorporate an anti-drug story arc in The Amazing Spider-Man #96-98, defying the current Comics Code, which prohibited the inclusion of illegal drugs under any circumstances.  However, the books sold so well that the Comics Code was subsequently revised.

Spider-Man wears a pretty consistent uniform of a blue, black, and red spandex unitard, patterned with a web design and featuring a big black spider on his chest.  I created three outfits inspired by his famous and iconic look...Enjoy!

Schoolgirl Cutie:

The Amazing Spiderman: For Class

This outfit features a white lace tank layered on top of a black tank; the lace is reminiscent of web, one of Spider-Man’s most noted superpowers.  The blue skinny jeans help the look to adhere to the web-slinger’s color motif while staying in sync with the colored jeans trend.  The ring and earrings continue the web-like theme, while the red friendship bracelet adds a dose of Spidey’s signature color.  Grey oxfords complete the look and make you fashionably class-ready!

La Vie Boheme:

The Amazing Spiderman: Dressy Boho

This outfit centers around a lacy orange-red sleeveless lace dress that is also the center focus of Spider-Man’s uniform.  The web-inspired chain necklace adds a statement and interest to the look, while these fabulous embellished sandals resemble the creepy-crawler that gave Spidey his powers.  The blue wrap bracelet features words and sayings like “Sow Love, Humanity, Come together, Plant Peace, Live in Unity”, all of which are ideals that Spider-Man is fighting for in his world.  Plus 25% of the net profits from purchasing this bracelet are donated to build a shelter for a Haitian community!  Finish the look off with this cute white cardi to ward off those chilly spring breezes.

On the Town:

The Amazing Spiderman: Going Out Look

Stand out in a crowd with this sleek ensemble!  The mesh paneling on the sides of this royal blue Forever 21 top bear a resemblance to a web-like design, while simultaneously staying totally on trend.  For extra coverage, layer a white camisole underneath.  Add a pair of black leggings with cool faux-leather panels to mimic Spider-Man’s signature figure hugging uniform.  Accessorize with this cool embellished red scarf to add some interest to the ensemble.  Strappy wedges, crackle nail polish, these intertwining silver hoops, and this abstract pattern red cuff continue the web-motif.

Bugle Boy:

The Amazing Spiderman: Peter Parker

Peter Parker, the geeky teen who is bitten by a radioactive spider and subsequently becomes Spider-Man, grows up to fulfill a variety of adult roles, the most typical and famous of which is a freelance photographer for the Daily Bugle under the editor J. Jonah Jameson.  This outfit captures his relaxed and quirky nature, from the plaid patterned Converse sneakers and boyfriend style jeans, to the adorable necklace with a camera charm.  Layer a white oxford shirt over a red tank, just as Peter layers his work ensemble over his Spider-Man uniform for a quick-change in times of emergency.  Add a leather belt and a denim bag trimmed with leather accents to tie the look together and to carry any essentials you may need.

Would you wear these looks?  Are you a fan of Spider-Man?  Are you excited for the upcoming reboot series?  Let me know in the comments!

Everybody Dance Now!

Helloooo again! I'm finally back from my week of working and I'm definitely still worn out; young children have so much energy!  I had tons of fun working with the kids though and I really hope they continue to learn and grow and maybe even pursue theatre...who knows?

As I try to relax and catch up on sleep, I have been catching up with a lot of my favorite shows on Hulu and have begun to notice a pattern.  I don't necessarily watch a lot of TV, but there are a few shows that I make sure I watch on a weekly basis.  My favorite show of all time is So You Think You Can Dance? (which airs at 8/7 central on Fox each Wednesday), and I have started to realize that many other shows I watch and enjoy are also about dance.  I have just started watching both Bunheads (on ABC Family) and Breaking Pointe (on The CW) and I am most definitely hooked on both.  Having taken dance for years, I am still always astounded at the sheer discipline and determination that all of these dancers possess; their passion, though occasionally obsessive, is quite inspiring.  As I was stretching at home recently in my weak attempt to become anywhere near as graceful and coordinated and beautiful as these dancers, I decided that I should do a post about my dance essentials, for they are a major factor in my overall style.  I spend many days wearing these clothes throughout the year and I think that they contribute to my overall comfortable, unrestrained, and free-flowing ensembles.  Enjoy!

Don't You Wanna Dance:

Dance Essentials

I have a very specific formula when it comes to dressing for dance.  I find that trying too hard to be cute and fashionable in just an unnecessary waste of time, so I rely on basic pieces.  The key to my dance look is layering; I find that if I am ever too hot or too cold while dancing, I can't focus and therefore, I am not getting as much out of the class as I could.  Layering is definitely the solution to this issue...you can always add and subtract layers.

To start, I have compiled an arsenal of Target's C9 by Champion collection of colorful sports bras.  These bras are so comfortable and supportive and the colors are incredibly cute and fun.  Another staple of my dance look are racerback tank tops.  When I was younger, I used to wear camisoles from Limited Too... I mean, Justice... but found that they could become too close fitting and stuffy, particularly while dancing.  Conversely, loose fitting racerback tanks are very breathable and flowing.  I also like how I am not distracted by straps or sleeves falling down my shoulder, as I was when I used to wear camis or regular tanks.

Next, I almost always wear a pair of shorts, no matter what the weather outside.  My favorites are the Capezio brand spandex cheer/dance/bike shorts (as seen in the bottom right corner).  They are incredibly comfortable and their tighter fit makes it easier to spot mistakes in alignment more easily.  I also really love Soffe shorts (bottom left corner); they're inexpensive, comfortable, and are appropriate for most athletic endeavors.  They stretch really nicely and last forever...I have had a few of my pairs for 8 years!

In the summertime, I don't need much more than a bra, tank, and shorts.  However, as the weather chills, I tend to add one of my many basic black leotards and a pair of convertible nude dance tights.  (Normally, I just get a cheap pair of nude tights at Target and cut holes in the bottom of the feet so that they are convertible.)  I also collect legwarmers to wear during the colder months, as well as fun, inexpensive socks.  I almost always wear hoodies to dance too, for I am notoriously chronically cold.

I am never a huge fan of accessories while dancing.  If anything, I use colorful elastic headbands or a rolled up bandana to keep my bangs out of my eyes and off my face.  Even though I usually dance barefoot because it is easier on the dance floor at my school, FootUndeez are definitely another good alternative to wearing shoes.  They are incredibly comfortable and allow dancers to feel as though they are dancing barefoot, while their feet are simultaneously protected from being torn up completely.

So there you have my dancing essentials!  These pieces help to create highly functional dance outfits, and are basic enough that they can also be used in your everyday ensembles.  What do you think?  Do you dance?  What are some of your essentials for your workouts?  Let me know :)

That's What Makes You Beautiful

As you may remember, I got the most awful sunburn a few weeks ago (you can read about it here).  Ever since, I have been intermittently peeling and suffering from super-dry skin.  I have been struggling to keep my skin moisturized and have been failing quite miserably.

However, the other day, my friend Nina sent me the recipe for an exfoliating body scrub and told me that if I used it, I would "reap the rewards of softer than ever, fragrant, and even tasty skin".  I saw her the following day, and she gave me a jar of the leftovers from her recipe.  I finally used it today in the shower and I am happy to report that it was nothing short of AMAZING.  I don't think that my skin has ever felt softer, smelled more awesome, and post-shower, my sunburn is barely peeling at all.  So without further ado, let me share the recipe for Nina's Tropical Summer Sugar Scrub!

What you'll need:

  • White Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Ground Sea Salt
  • Organic Dark Honey
  • A few wedges worth of Lemon Juice (she says you can also use Grapefruit or Lime if you're feeling saucy)
  • Coconut Oil

How you make it:
Mix equal parts of white and brown sugar and then add a bit of ground sea salt.  Add in the honey, juice, and coconut oil.  Stir into a loose paste, and then hop in the shower and scrub!  Be warned that the oil can make your skin a bit slippery when you first get out of the shower, but your skin will soak up the extra oil within the half hour.

Why these ingredients?

  • Well, white and brown sugar help to exfoliate the skin quite nicely.
  • Organic honey has wonderful benefits as well.  It is a natural antiseptic and keeps wounds, cuts, scrapes, and burns clean, free from infection, and promotes healing.  It clears blemishes and when applied to skin and then washed off, it helps to keep skin as soft as a baby's bottom.  Raw honey can also soften facial lines and tighten pores.  (Read more here!)
  • The lemon juice (or any citrus fruit substitute) contains a natural exfoliating ingredient called alpha hydroxyl.  The natural astringent properties cause the juice to help with oily skin, acne, unclogging pores, and eliminating blackheads.  The juices refresh and revive the skin and help to fade scars and other skin discolorations.  (Read more here!)
  • Coconut oil has amazing benefits.  It is chock full of Vitamin E and fatty acids that anti-fungal, anti-oxidizing, and antibacterial (like the honey!); all of these effects make for fantastic skin! (Read more here!)

I hope you get a chance to make and use this wonderful concoction! Your thirsty summer skin will thank you for it :)

On an entirely different note, Memphis was absolutely incredible.  I have seen a lot of fantastic theatre in my  life, but this show was definitely the most amazing performance I have ever seen.  If you care about theatre at all, I would definitely recommend that you see this show if possible, whether on tour or on Broadway.  Currently on Broadway, Adam Pascal (of Rent fame) is starring as Memphis radio DJ Huey Calhoun.  As amazing as I'm sure Mr. Pascal is, Bryan Fenkhart (the Huey that I saw) is unbelievable in his portrayal of the lovably  passionate, rebellious, and simple music lover.  I would highly recommend that you see him, whether in a performance, a concert, or even on YouTube.  He is insanely talented and brought down the house quite a number of times throughout the show.  I even met him afterward and he was the coolest famous person that I have ever been lucky enough to meet (I have been fortunate enough to have met quite a few); he carried on a really nice conversation with my friend, boyfriend, and I and his humility and overall "chill-ness" made him just as endearing in real life as he was onstage.  Luckily, his incredible performance did not by any means put the others to shame.  Felicia Boswell starred as the black club singer (also named Felicia) and provided a stunning performance as a Beyonce-esque diva ahead of her time (though her stellar voice puts Beyonce's and nearly all other pop "diva's" voices to shame).  Quentin Earl Darrington, Will Mann, and Rhett George as Delray, Bobby, and Gator respectively each stole the show with their phenomenal voices and presence onstage.  Everyone in the show was incredibly talented; the dancing was spectacular, the music was an absolute joy, and I was so drawn into the characters' lives and stories that I lost track of any bit of reality.  To me, that is what theatre is meant to do :)

You'll Never Let Anyone Steal Your Rock and Roll

I am so beyond excited.  Tonight, I am going to see the national touring company of the 2010 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, the critically acclaimed Memphis.  Though I hadn't really heard of the show prior to the 2010 Tony Awards, I really enjoyed the company's performance and was really intrigued by the show when it ended up winning the most coveted award of the evening.  I have wanted to see the show ever since that night.

The Poster!!

When I was in high school, our chorus program took trips to New York City every year to see a Broadway show.  My freshman year, they saw A Chorus Line (I didn't go).  My sophomore year, we were going to see Les Miserables (I am so psyched for the movie release!), but due to the infamous stagehand strike, we saw instead the Radio City Music Hall Holiday Spectacular, featuring the Rockettes.  That was fine, but since I had never seen a Broadway show and Les Mis was to be my first, I was pretty disappointed.  The year after, I was recovering from a horrible bout with pneumonia and couldn't see The Phantom of the Opera with the rest of the department (though, funnily enough, everyone came back telling me that the girl who played Meg Giry could have been my twin).  My senior year, we saw the amazing bilingual revival of West Side Story, which I really enjoyed.  I know if I had seen the other shows, I would have really enjoyed them as well.

A bunch of "classic" shows... with a few newer ones too :)

But do you see the trend?  We only saw "old" shows during my time in high school.  Sure, they are all fantastic classics... but I still wish we were given the opportunity to see the new-cutting edge shows popping up all over Broadway.  For instance, my senior year, I was dying to see the rock-opera Next to Normal.  I graduated from high school in 2010, and of course, the following year, the chorus department goes to see none other but Memphis, which not only was new, but the Tony winning show of the year.  I'll admit I was a little bitter and a lot jealous of my younger peers.  (That jealousy grew slightly this past year, when the department, which now includes my sister, got to see Sister Act). That January, my boyfriend and I went to New York for a day and got student rush tickets to see American Idiot on Broadway with Billy Joe Armstrong!  As exciting as that was, I remember staring wistfully at the adjacent theater where Memphis was playing, wishing that I could get a chance to see it, for the line for tickets stretched around the corner and the theater's marquee glittered with the show's acclaim.

When I went to New York to try out for Season 2 of The Glee Project this year, I, of course, asked my mom if she would mind taking me to see it, but to no avail.  However, all of that is now in the past because tonight is the night!  I am so excited to see the show and re-watching and re-listening to the Broadway company's Tony performance is getting me super pumped.

I'll let you know how the show goes... I'm sure it will be incredible!! :)

She Works Hard for the Money

Dear Readers,

I forgot to tell you that last weekend, I managed to finally get a job!  My boyfriend got an email from his college last Friday that was requesting some last minute stand-ins for some camp counselors who couldn't work during a session of the camp that is run out of the town theater.  I emailed her right away to say that I was more than interested in the position and about 15 hours, a few emails, and a phone call later, I was hired for the position!  So, next week, I get to move across the state and play acting games all day and everyday with 5-8 year olds.  I get to work with them on learning lines and monologues and poems, teach them a big song and dance number, and basically help them to find the magical fun in theatre that I did when I began performing more than 12 years ago.  I get to see them learn to love the art form that has changed me and my life for the better.  I cannot wait at all!

Today, I get to venture off for a pre-camp meeting with the super kind lady in charge of the camp.  I am very excited to meet her in person and find out exactly what next week may hold.  Until tomorrow, dear readers :)

Starry Starry Night

Happy Tuesday, everyone!! It's a pretty dismal day outside here today, but I hope some of you are experiencing some lovely summer sun somewhere.

Did you happen to catch the 2012 Tony Awards on CBS this past Sunday night?

I live for this fantastic awards show every second Sunday of June, and this year was a phenomenal show.  Audra McDonald (one of my idols) won her first Tony Award in the Best Actress in a Musical for the role of Bess (in Porgy and Bess), while her show won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

So... may I please be Audra McDonald?

I was also super happy that the Broadway interpretation of the movie Once was able to sweep nearly every category it was nominated for, including Best Musical.  I was also ecstatic that Clyborne Park (a sort of a sequel to A Raisin in the Sun) won Best Play; I had to read it for school this past year and I really loved it.  Also, even though Andrew Garfield (the new Spider-Man!!) didn't win for Best Featured Actor in a Play (Christian Borle, the original Emmett in Legally Blonde: The Musical and composer Tom Levitt on NBC's Smash, won instead!!), the play Garfield was in, the literary classic Death of a Salesman, won Best Revival of a Play.  All in all, you can say I was pretty happy with this years awards.

Emma Stone with nominee (and Spider-Man!) Andrew Garfield and Best Feature Actor in a Play winner Christian Borle

And with the flawless Neil Patrick Harris hosting yet again, how could they really go wrong?

Did you get to see the Tony Awards this year?  Have you seen them before?  What is your favorite Broadway musical or play?  What do you think of this year's winners?  Let me know!!

Musical Musings: I Can Dream, Can't I?

In my last post, I told you all about how I was going to see two more musicals over the weekend: Fiddler on the Roof and Sisters of Swing. Though I enjoyed both immensely, Sisters of Swing appealed to not only my love of music and theatre, but to my inner history nerd as well. The relatively new show tells the story of the famed singing group The Andrews Sisters.

In case you've never heard of them, redhead LaVerne, brunette Maxene, and blonde Patricia Andrews were a harmonizing sister trio that rose to great fame in the late 1930s and were a household name for years to come. The trio first gained national attention when they released their version of the traditional Yiddish song, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön", in November 1937. They went on to record numerous hits on the Decca Record label, until the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. During World War II, they traveled throughout the world to entertain Allied troops in a variety of different environments, such as on stage, in hospitals, and in war zones themselves. They also recorded Victory Discs for the troops, and even treated lucky soldiers to dinner while on bases.

After the war, the Andrew Sisters continued performing until the youngest sister, Patty, joined a different singing group without telling her sisters... they found out from the papers instead! Thus began a tumultuous relationship between the trio that resulted in numerous new hit records, a Broadway show, estrangements, lawsuits, and solo careers. LaVerne died in 1967 at age 55 from cancer. After suffering from multiple heart attacks, Maxene died in 1995 at the age of 74. At 94 years old, Patty is still living in Northridge, California.

Though the trio may be no more, their legacy lives on. They have influenced numerous artists throughout the years, and have inspired a new generation of musicians. They changed the 1930's music world for the better and opened doors further for women in music. I personally love their music; I have had to sing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" in the past and its catchy rhythms and interesting harmonies make it so much fun to sing and just jam to. My favorite song that I have heard by the Andrews Sisters thus far is definitely "Carmen's Boogie" (which you can listen to by clicking here). I had never heard the tune until I saw Sisters of Swing, and I was absolutely enthralled by the number. My 89 year-old grandmother (who has dementia and can barely remember what happened only a few minutes ago) told me today that she used to listen to the trio on the radio as a young girl and still remembered the words to some of their most popular hits like, "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree", "Three Little Fishes", and of course "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön". I think that a group that was able to make such an impression on her waning memory must have been nothing short of remarkable.

During the show, I was also enamored by the fashionable 1930s and 40s ensembles in which the sisters were often clad. I was inspired to create a modernized outfit reminiscent of the Andrews sisters' adorable yet classy get-ups.

It Means "You're the Fairest in the Land":

Inspired by The Andrews Sisters

A bright pink lace circle skirt is perfectly 1940's while also being trendily summer appropriate.  Add a sheer blouse in a complimentary light pink layered on top of a white tank for extra coverage.  Blazers are a fashion staple for the singing sisters; this white boyfriend blazer is a fresh and modern take on the classic silhouette.  Neutral accessories like this light brown belt and nude colored flats tone down this bright look and give it a classic touch.  Pearl earrings decorated as flowers add a cute twist to a timeless accessory.  The one-of-a-kind charm necklace from Etsy patterned with music and a similar vintage-looking watch with a music patterned face both pay homage to the music at the root of this inspiring act.  Top it all off with this gorgeous wavy hairstyle inspired by Allie's hair in The Notebook!

Do you know who the Andrews sisters are?  What do you think of their music?  Would you wear this vintage inspired outfit?  Who are some of your favorite musicians of the past?

Another Op'nin, Another Show

I am sorry that I have been super lacking in entries the past few days!  I have been extra busy lately what with little jobs I need to get done around my house, trying to get a job, teaching myself music theory, practicing singing and piano, taking care of my grandmother (who, we unfortunately found out a few weeks ago, has some pretty rough cancer), and taking some quality friends/family/boyfriend time to chill, relax, and unwind.

However, recently, my dates with my boyfriend have been less chill guitar-playing, and more theatrically oriented.  He is lucky enough to have gotten an internship position where he writes reviews for various professional shows and is then published.  Since I have been the one accompanying him to these various venues, I have been getting  to see some pretty awesome theatre.

First, we saw Romeo and Juliet...in French opera form.  Though I love music, I learned that opera isn't exactly my thing...I ended up sleeping through a good chunk of an act.  I'm sure that if I enjoyed opera, it would've been incredible, but I'm just not a fan of melodramatic singing and cliched dance moves and storytelling.

Tonight though, we saw Spring Awakening; it was beyond phenomenal.  I knew of a couple of performers beforehand as they either are currently in the same Musical Theatre program as me or recently graduated.  I spent the whole show either with goosebumps, trying to stop myself from bawling, trying to make sure my mouth wasn't hanging open in awe, wishing that I could be in it, or completely lost in the music and story.  Though I knew all the music before I saw the show, I was still astounded by it's depth and power.

Tomorrow night and Saturday, we are going to see Fiddler on the Roof and Sisters of Swing (which tells the story of the famed Andrews Sisters).  Fingers crossed that they're amazing as well!!

UPDATE: Here are the links to his reviews!!

My Outsides Look Cool

Ikat Pencil Skirt- Forever 21

Hello, readers!! I hope that everyone is having a wonderful week thus far.  As promised, today's post is all about this adorable ikat print pencil skirt that I bought at Forever 21 yesterday for a mere $17.80.  I have designed three different outfits for all different events and occasions in life.  I hope you enjoy!

NOTE: Because I am rather petite, all of these outfits include heels.  Feel free to substitute any pair of flats into any of these looks!

Sexy and Free:

Sexy and Free

For a look that would be perfect for a date, dinner with friends, or even a summer night out on the town, pair this skirt with a gorgeous silky tank.  I love the geometric cutouts in the straps of this one, as it adds a unique interest to the look.  The light pink color picks up on the mauve print in the skirt and softens the whole look.  Add some edge with these black patent leather slingbacks that match the skirt's skinny belt.  Pile on oodles of tiny rings as well as this gorgeous turquoise cocktail ring.  Add this heart pendant necklace which, incidentally, doubles as a unique watch.  Top it all of by wearing your hair in this fantastic hair-bow bun, a unique spin on the ever-trendy top knot.

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful:

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful

For a more daytime appropriate look, try pairing the skirt with this flowing, yellow, cropped blouse.  Because the skirt is so high-waisted though, the hem of the shirt can be comfortably tucked in.  This yellow color contrasts wonderfully with the navy in the skirt, and it brightens up the ensemble, making it summer perfect.  Add some floral accents with more soft and summery colors, such as the mint wrap bracelet and lavender cocktail ring.  The gold flowery studs are simple and chic, as is this peace sign ring.  These peep-toe heels are a fun spin to the nude heels trend as they are patterned with a beautiful sheer lace.  Finish off the carefree look by wearing your hair in one of my personal favorite styles, this side french fishtail braid.

Professional Chic:

Professional Chic

This look is a glamorously fun take on professional wear.  Start off by tucking a plain blue button down blouse into the skirt to create a sort of monochromatic color scheme.  Add these adorable navy pumps from Modcloth to continue the blue theme.  For a little sparkle, these fun accessories from the LC by Lauren Conrad Collection for Kohls are classy and chic, combined with a bit of girly quirk.  The bow earrings are cute but unobtrusive, while the heart necklace is a classic, timeless accessory that is always appropriate.  These cat-eye sunnies are perfect for sheilding your eyes from the hot sun during your summer lunch break, as well as making you feel as glamorous as your favorite celebrities.  Clip your tresses into this half-up hairstyle with this beautiful jeweled hair bow clip.

What do you think of these styles?  How would you wear this skirt?  Let me know!

Call Me, Maybe?

"Call Me, Maybe?" is my guilty pleasure song of the moment...

My life has been quite the whirlwind these past few days; after recovering from my horrible sunburn, I once again took to the coast to cheer my two younger brothers on as they played in their first lacrosse tournament with their summer select teams.  It was lots of fun to watch my brothers play and hang out with my usually MIA sixteen year old sister.  Both of my brothers and their teams played pretty well, with both teams playing a combined total of ten games over the course of the weekend.  Now, ten games sounds like a lot of cheering and watching on my parents', my sister's, and my parts, but luckily, three games for each happened simultaneously on adjacent fields.  We would just set up our folding lounge chairs in the middle of both fields and run back and forth between the two, screaming and cheering and booing and shrieking at both games rather equally.  Though we got to equally support both of my brothers, it was one of the most confusing experiences ever, and none of us were ever able to keep track of the respective scores.

My family had lots of fun hanging out at the hotel too; we got to chill and bond over "How I Met Your Mother" and the ever-quotable classic Mean Girls, while also getting to relax in the hotel's pool and hot tub (...well, my sister and I sang a lot while in the pool and hot tub).  It was a fun, carefree, and necessary weekend.

The one problem with going back to the coast after a mere few days of being there and only a week after a nine hour round trip to the wedding I attended was that in the course of ten days, I had traveled in a car for a 23.5 hour total.  Though that sounds rather impressive, I really, really HATE car rides and the intermediate travel from place to place.  I abhor traffic and bridges and lonely countryside roads more than most things in this world; I just don't have the patience to deal with them, particularly in excess as I have, and bridges (or falling off them) are my worst nightmare.  I am also TERRIFIED of developing blood clots, especially since my dad had blood clots in his leg and go through his heart and lungs less than two years ago.  They got so bad since my family took a LOT of car trips that summer; apparently, long car rides without a lot of walking around and circulation cause blood clots to form and grow more and more severe.  I am so paranoid about getting them that I would get out and jog and stretch every time we stopped.  I am definitely planning a break from road tripping for the next few weeks at least.

If all goes as I hope though, I won't have time or energy for any other big vacations this summer.  I have been unemployed since I have returned home from my sophomore year of college; I did have a work-study music library position all school year, but that unfortunately ended for the summer.  Thus, even since before I moved back home for the summer, I have been desperately seeking a job.  I have filled out more online applications than I have even dared to count, but so far, this has been to no avail.  Most of the places that provide opportunities near my house are full or have limited themselves to hiring only those with "previous retail experience".  Considering that my previous jobs have been in a hair salon and day spa, an amusement park dancer, and in a music library, I don't exactly fit the bill.  However, I don't understand how I can ever gain retail experience if retailers will not hire me because I lack it.  Oh well.

Today, I decided to be super proactive about my job hunt and went to the mall (about 20 minutes away) with my boyfriend (who also is in need of a summer job).  We made our rounds throughout the mall, focusing on all of our favorite stores, as well as stores that we've never been to but think look really cool.  I was shocked and slightly disappointed with how many of the shops still utilized paper applications over online ones; I thought that everywhere was trying to go green.  After gathering quite a thick sheaf of applications, we made our way over to our favorite little artsy cafe in the downtown historic district.  A grilled cheese, green tea, hand cramps, and a few hours later, we had both completed a substantial number of applications and made our way back to the mall and turned in our applications.  I got really lucky and scored an interview at one of my favorite clothing stores for Thursday!  I was super excited and now I cannot WAIT for Thursday to come.  Fingers crossed that I get this (or ANY other) job!

One more thing: today at the mall, I exchanged a too-long maxi dress from the always lovely Forever 21 for this adorable, fashionably professional, ikat print pencil skirt:

Ikat Pencil Skirt- $17.80

Since my usually style is pretty casual, I plan to wear this to my interview on Thursday, as well as other (hopefully) potential interviews yet to come in the world of fashion retail.  I love how this skirt is a playful take on a classic silhouette, and I believe that it will help convey my sense of style and fun-loving nature to potential future employers.  Check back soon for a variety of ways to style this uniquely fun skirt!  In the meantime, I will be anxiously waiting for my phone to ring...

Life is a Maze and Love is a Riddle

If you are not one of the fortunate many who have seen the British teen movie Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging, I would definitely suggest that you get a copy as soon as possible and watch it on your next girls' night in.  Last school year, my college friends and I spent a weekend watching it multiple times!  This witty film is based on the first two books in Louise Rennison's Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series (Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging and It's OK, I'm Wearing Really Big Knickers).  As the book titles may suggest, this movie follows the life and times of fourteen year-old Georgia Nicholson, a creatively-minded and completely self-conscious girl who works incessantly to impress the school's new hot guy while simultaneously planning her totally awesome fifteenth birthday party.  The film is fraught with hilariously random situations, unforgettable one-liners, and all the embarrassing problems that come with being a young teenage girl.  For today's post, I decided to provide some outfits inspired by the main character Georgia, her best friend Jas, and their arch-nemesis, the cruel "Slaggy Lindsay".

Georgia Nicholson

Georgia is the main character of the film and the voice of all awkward teenage girls everywhere.  Though she tries desperately to be cool, she eventually realizes that she is wonderful, just being herself.  She has an angry-looking cat named Angus who is constantly dressed in costume by her adorably weird younger sister Libby.  She utilizes both in order to attract Robbie, the new guy with whom she is in love.  Her awkwardness and constant confusion is completely endearing, and she keeps you laughing the entire movie.

Georgia is the queen of casual with a colorful twist.  She wears a variety of skirts throughout the film, so get her look in this neon yellow body-con skirt.  She also sports tons of graphic and patterned tees during the movie, so pay homage to her wonderfully crazy tabby cat Angus with this loose and comfy, cat-print top.  Georgia is rarely seen without wearing a hoodie, so add this unique one for an extra layer of light warmth.  Bright socks in silly patterns make her knee-sock obsession summer appropriate, especially combined with  cute Converses.  Add this plaid phone case that matches Georgia's oft-worn school uniform.

Jas

Jas is Georgia's absolute best friend, who is also obsessed with getting a boyfriend.  She is a member of the Ace Gang, a four girl group of best friends that include Georgia and Jas, as well as Ellen and Rosie.  She is incredibly self-conscious as well, and spends a good chunk of the movie wishing that her boobs were bigger.  Though she is not the brightest bulb in the box, she definitely proves that she is a loyal best friend.

Though like Georgia, Jas enjoys comfy layers, she is definitely the more girly of the pairing.  Show her sweet spirit with her sweet floral skirt and match it with this basic tee.  As contrast to the mint-colored skirt, add this mustard colored statement scarf in order to create one of spring's hottest color combinations.  Jas is rarely seen without her trusty denim jacket, so be sure to grab this all-season staple.  Finally, a pair of bright orange Ked's and this crotchet headband (similar to the fabulously fashionable hippie-headband she wore at Georgia's birthday party) complete the look with the perfect amount of quirk.

Lindsay

"Slaggy Lindsay" is the Regina George of Georgia's life; though she is perceived as being gorgeous and the ideal teenage girl, she is completely horrid and is referred to as "the slag of the century".  Lindsay is also the girlfriend of Robbie, the guy that Georgia is obsessed with.  As if that weren't enough, Lindsay is planning her ridiculously cool birthday party the same day as Georgia's in the ultra-chic new club!  Lindsay is a total fake and luckily, eventually gets her comeuppance.

Though she is truly a mean girl, Lindsay always is sure to always be perfectly chic and trendy.  You can rest assured that she would grab a pair of these wonderful tangerine skinnies as soon as Kate Middleton donned her iconic pair a few months ago.  A slightly cropped, tied, button-down is subtly sexy while keeping the preppy look fresh for the warmer months.  Classic and dainty accessories such as nude wedges, this adorable wrap watch, and this pretty pendant add to the outfit's chicness.  Lastly, Lindsay would totally wear her hair in LC's famous side braid, complete with a complementary yellow flower clip holding it back.

Have you seen this movie?  What do you think of these outfits?  Let me know :)

Musical Musings: I Feel Like Bustin' Loose

Whitney Houston and Donna Summer
Recently, the music world has been plagued with a string of untimely deaths.  Legends such as Whitney Houston and disco queen Donna Summer have passed before their time.  However, if you have been in the DC area recently, you could not help but hear about the passing of musical icon Chuck Brown, known in the nation's capital as the "Godfather of Go-go".

...What is go-go music?  Well, it is a major musical movement stemming mainly from the DMV area during the 1960s and 1970s.  It is a combination of funk, r&b, the beginnings of hip-hop, gospel, and dance tracks with a heavy drum back beat and live audience call and response.  Basically, when the many bands associated with the go-go era played a show, it was a big interactive party!

Chuck Brown
The late Chuck Brown is noted as being one of the major creators of the sound with his band, Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers playing their unique style of funk all throughout the club circuit.  Brown, born in August 1936 in North Carolina, had built himself up from humble roots.  He tried to join the military at 13 to escape the drudging farm work, but being too young at the time, he ended up digging trenches for a living.  He ended up in Lorton Prison being charged with aggravated assault not too long after, but instead of giving up on life, he decided to do something special with it.  He learned to play guitar and subsequently became the token entertainer in the prison.  When he was released, he joined a band called Jerry Butler and the Earls of Rhythm and in 1965, he joined Los Lotinos...his legacy began thereafter.  He grew to be an indisputable icon in the DC area and also became a hit nationwide.   Have you ever heard Nelly's hit song "Hot in Herre"?  The hook of that song was derived from Chuck Brown and The Soulsearchers' 1978 hit "Bustin' Loose".  He also recorded go-go interpreted covers of jazz and blues songs, such as "Go-Go Swing", a cover of Duke Ellington's famous "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing".  He continued performing until his death on May 16.  Throughout the years he has received a Grammy Award Nomination had a DC street named after him, and has been honored by the National Symphony Orchestra.  His memorial service at the Washington Convention Center this past Thursday turned into an electric, "homegoing" party, with his music and legacy being honored in full.

The Mixed Breed...and my Daddy!
I actually have a one degree of separation connection with the late Mr. Brown.  My dad was a member of a pretty well-known and reputable funk/soul/go-go band in the 1970s called The Mixed Breed.  They played throughout many states such as Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, as well as DC and Canada during the decade.  They also played at one of President Jimmy Carter's 1977 Inaugural "Parties" (as they were referred to that year) at DC's Sheraton Park Hotel (now the Marriott-Wardman Park Hotel).  The Mixed Breed also managed to snag a contract with the super-famous RCA record label that unfortunately, ended up falling through.  Their main stage during the early and mid-1970s was The Soul Palace in Alexandria, Virginia; when they would play out of town shows, who would step in and play for them but the Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers!  My dad said that he was a really nice man and was sad at the passing of such a legend.  Brown's go-go definitely inspired my dad's band as they continued to help shape the go-go era of music history.  One of The Mixed Breed's biggest hits, "Gotta Get Home", can be listened to here:

Mr. Chuck Brown definitely is a music legend and most definitely will not be forgotten.  Don't forget to check out his music!  It's tons of fun and definitely will get you pumped up and excited for any occasion :)
